What Have We Been Up To In 2018?

2018 has been a busy year for BHESCo and we’re very proud of the great strides our innovative business continues to make.

In our final blog of the year, we reflect on some highlights from the last 12 months before looking ahead to 2019.

Our Biggest Solar Power Project To Date

In March of 2018 BHESCo installed a huge 28kW solar panel array on the workshop roof of Lewes based business Alistair Fleming Design.

The equipment is expected save over £1,000 each year on energy bills and reduce annual carbon emissions by 16 tonnes.

Launch of the +IMPACT tariff with Our Power

BHESCo Our Power +IMPACT tariff

Since BHESCo began we have dreamed of offering our very own community energy tariff.

This year we came a step closer to that dream by partnering with Our Power to bring our customers +IMPACT tariff.

Powered by 100% community owned clean energy, the +IMPACT tariff also tackles fuel poverty at the local level. For every customer that chooses the +IMPACT tariff, BHESCo receives a donation of £36 which goes toward our fuel poverty alleviation programme.

Winning Big At The BAHBAs

BHESCo Brighton and Hove Business Awards 2018 Winner

For the second year in a row BHESCo was named as a Finalist in the ‘Green Business of The Year’ catagory at the prestigious Brighton and Hove Business Awards (the ‘BAHBAs).

After last year’s narrow miss, we were overjoyed to be named winner of the catagory, as judged by Brighton University’s Green Growth Platform.

Commenting on BHESCo’s victory, judge Lorraine Bell described BHESCo as a ‘disruptive innovator’ who are “leading the community energy revolution”.

Energy Saving Service milestone

We launched our pioneering Energy Saving Service back in January 2016, with the aim of providing low cost energy efficiency improvements to the local community.

There are few examples of a similar service elsewhere in the UK, and we designed our process and reporting from scratch. The service has improved and evolved with every survey completed, and we were thrilled to have recently completed our 500th survey.

This is an incredible milestone for a service that’s less than two years old, and we look forward to continued growth and success in the years to come.

Launch of our Clean Up Your Act campaign

At BHESCo we believe that one of the biggest impacts we can have in the battle against climate change is in deciding where our energy comes from, which is why we launced our ‘Clean Up Your Act‘ campaign.

The choice is up to us whether we get our energy from suppliers that use dirty polluting fossil fuels, or suppliers that use clean renewable energy sources like solar and wind power.

There are lots of clean energy suppliers to choose from, and by switching to these suppliers customers will be directly supporting the growth of renewable energy in the UK.

If enough people choose to switch to renewable energy suppliers, the energy market as a whole will be forced to meet rising demand, and fossil fuels will soon be a thing of the past.

What Next For BHESCo?

We’ll need to make the most of some time off in December because we’ve got loads of amazing projects lined up for 2019. Some of these new projects are ‘first of a kind’ and will take BHESCo into the big leagues of community energy.

Here’s a quick look at our most exciting ventures.

Firle Village Heat Network

In partnership with ReEnergise and the Firle Estate, BHESCo have been conducting a feasibility study into developing a low carbon heat network in the rural village of Firle. We have now finished our study and will be reporting our findings to village residents before commencing on a major fundraising programme before work can start on this incredible project.

Food Waste To Community Energy

For a number of years BHESCo have been developing an initiative to take 35,000 tonnes of food waste and use it to power an Anaerobic Digestion power plant in the Sussex area.

In 2019 we will be ramping up our activities with an extensive community engagement programme to encourage local restaurants, hotels, cafes and bars to donate their food waste to our community owned digester.

To start with, we’ll be holding a public meeting in February 2019 to provide more details about the project and to explain how everyone can get involved.

Sussex Solar Power

The clock is ticking…

We have until April 2019 to install as much solar power as possible before the UK Government cuts new solar subsidies forever.

BHESCo have EIGHT community solar projects designed and ready to go but we can’t do anything without your help.

By investing in BHESCo you will earn 5% and become a member of our innovative energy cooperative.

Will you join our crusade and support solar power in Sussex?

Alternatively, if you have been thinking about installing solar on your home or business then the time to act is now, before its too late.

BHESCo can design and install a new solar system for you for no upfront costing using our ‘Pay As You Save’ solar initiative.

As you can see, we have a busy year ahead of us!

Following a recent report that the world has until 2030 to avoid major global warming, we can feel the public becoming increasingly hungry for action on climate change.

2019 will be a vital year for the future of our planet. We need to make the changes NOW that will ensure a healthy environment for generations to come.

We hope you will join our cause and support clean energy in Sussex. Whether you become a shareholder, switch to clean energy, or improve the energy efficiency of your home, there’s room for everyone to fight climate change.

What will you do in 2019?
