2022 will be remembered as the year the reality of climate change hit home in the UK.
Unprecedented heatwaves have left lawns dry and dusty, rivers without water, and large parts of the country to be officially classified as being in drought.
2022 saw the highest ever temperatures recorded in the UK and the Met Office issue its first ever red warning for ‘exceptional heat’.
The trouble is, such extreme heat will not be exceptional in a world hurtling towards climate breakdown.
Fortunately, the science tells us that there is still time to avoid the worst-case scenarios of climate change if we take action now.
The UK government has failed to take the climate emergency seriously ever since David Cameron vowed to ‘cut the green crap’.
For this reason, it us up to us, the public, to demonstrate climate leadership by developing our own clean energy projects in our own communities.
We must make sure that the places where we live, work and learn are powered by locally owned renewable energy.
Just as importantly, it is our duty to ensure that everyone in our community has access to affordable heat and power. Never has this been more important than during the current energy crisis, where energy prices have rocketed for homes and businesses all across Europe.
BHESCo is showing what can be achieved with a new suite of projects that will save thousands of pounds on energy bills and drive down carbon emissions for decades ahead.
Our latest share offer gives you an opportunity to be a part of a sea-change transforming the way we use and source energy.
Your investment will go directly to new solar power projects that will bring clean affordable energy to your neighbours in Sussex.
Since we launched our share offer in November 2022 we have raised £40,000 of new investment which will go directly towards the development of new community energy projects in Sussex.
We will be putting 175 solar panels on Hill Park School, which we expect to save £205,000 over the next 20 years for this special school in Brighton. This is a very important project because we can demonstrate how solar power can be achieved even without the Feed-In-Tariff subsidy. We hope that this will bring great inspiration to other schools who wondered if solar power was possible in a subsidy free landscape.
We will then be installing a rooftop solar PV system at an industrial estate near Henfield. This pioneering project will demonstrate how industrial and manufacturing businesses, who are big energy users, can benefit enormously from introducing renewable energy to their operations.
Any solar electricity generated that is not used on-site will be exported to the electricity network, helping to further decarbonise the local energy grid.
Other projects under development include an equestrian centre, a business park, and a wine estate.
Since our first share offer in 2016, BHESCo have raised £1.5 million pounds from our shareholder members, investing their money in projects which will reduce energy costs by £1,578,800 and save 7,337 tonnes of carbon emissions from polluting our planet.
As our membership grows so does our reach and impact. We look forward to welcoming new and existing members alike to support this innovative new wave of projects that will deliver significant and meaningful benefits to our community and our natural environment.
