Every winter between October and March BHESCo take part in a national programme called the Big Energy Saving Network, or BESN.
The government backed scheme aims to support vulnerable consumers with their energy bills, and to encourage more people to think about switching tariff or supplier.
BHESCo have been a partner of the BESN since 2014 and have established strong links with many of the city’s food banks and support centres where we regularly attend and provide advice.
There are millions of people in the UK who are paying far too much for their monthly bills, and as a result sometimes cannot afford to adequately heat their home or buy enough food. Our mission is to find these customers and to help them get a fairer deal.
A New Approach
This year we undertook a speaking tour to residents’ associations which enabled us to reach a much larger audience with our message. In addition, we ran workshops for over 60 NHS nurses so that they can provide advice about keeping a warm home to their patients.
By the end of the six-month programme, we were able to advise over 600 residents and frontline workers on simple ways to save money on fuel bills. As a result of encouraging people to switch and apply for the Warm Home Discount, we have helped bill-payers to collectively save £21,800. Check out our infographic for all the key stats and numbers.
As well as getting people a better deal on their bills, we hope that our work has empowered residents to take more ownership and control of their energy supply. Many customers we speak to find their bills confusing and stressful. We want to give people the confidence to switch to a cheaper deal each and every year, and to use their heating in winter without fear.
