In 2016 the Montessori Place purchased a large site for a new school near Lewes. The property was built in the 19th Century and was heated using Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), which is expensive and highly polluting. The building also had very poor insulation and old, inefficient lighting.

The site is comprised of three main buildings which sit in a large site containing many mature trees, protected woodland areas, and a walled garden. Heating is currently provided by fossil fuels such as oil and LPG. The main building has unfilled cavity walls and an uninsulated roof.

BHESCo was engaged to find an alternative to using the liquid gas, and to improve the energy efficiency of the building.

Project Delivery

Following a detailed survey of the premises BHESCo designed a cutting edge integrated energy system, consisting of roof mounted solar PV, an air source heat pump, and underfloor heating. 

To reduce energy consumption, we project managed the installation of an energy efficient LED lighting system and replaced the existing insulation.

For this project, BHESCo partnered with Solar Advanced Systems to install the solar PV system, AJ Taylor to replace the lighting, and IBD distribution to install the air source heat pump.

As well as saving the Montessori Place School a great deal of money by generating their own energy, this project is also able to generate income due to its eligibility for both the Feed In Tariff and the Renewable Heat Incentive.
