As a social enterprise, BHESCo’s main motivation is to make the world a better place – not to maximise profit for shareholders.
Our two big goals are to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels, and to make energy costs more affordable.
We’ve achieved many great things since we were set up in 2013. This page shows you just a few of our biggest achievements.

BHESCo was founded as a ‘for-purpose’ social enterprise, which means that the reason we exist is to deliver meaningful social and environmental value to the communities we work with.
BHESCo is an impact-driven organisation who measure success not by profits and dividends but by the reduction of energy costs and carbon emissions for our customers.
BHESCo are very proud of the remarkable things we have achieved since we were founded in 2012 and we are excited to continue growing our business and expanding our reach.
As a social enterprise it is very important for BHESCo to show our supporters (and our critics) that we are delivering meaningful and measurable benefits to the community.
Here are some of the most important metrics that we measure in relation to our community energy projects:
68

8,984

£4 million

BHESCo work with a wide variety of customer types and building types, and pride ourselves in finding a way for everyone to reduce their energy costs and carbon emissions. For example, if the property is not a good candidate for solar power due to having a north facing roof or being surrounded by trees, then we can explore opportunities for energy efficiency upgrades and low-carbon heating.
A very important part of BHESCo’s work focusses on tackling fuel poverty in Brighton and Hove.
This means helping families that may struggle to afford their heating and energy costs, by giving expert advice, issuing vouchers to top-up meters, and providing energy saving equipment like draught-excluders and low-energy bulbs.
Since 2015 we have:
BHESCo’s community energy projects have brought us together with churches and schools, warehouses and leisure centres, community centres and art galleries, and dance studios and office spaces.
Our team have experience with every kind of energy saving and energy generating technology from solar panels to heat pumps, and biomass boilers to battery storage.
You can get a flavour for the broad mix of community energy projects we have developed by browsing through our collection of Case Studies.
BHESCo partnered with the Montessori Place School to design and install a number of low-carbon technologies which work together to reduce energy costs and environmental impact.
As a result of our interventions, the school has reduced its annual carbon emissions by 80%.
