Typical home energy saving improvements

Every home is different, but there are a number of common energy saving solutions that BHESCo recommend to reduce long-term energy costs.

Solar panels

By installing solar panels on your home you can start generating your own electricity, meaning you won’t need to buy as much from your energy supplier. This will bring big savings on your energy bills, as well as making your home more eco friendly. You can also export excess electricity you don’t use.

Heat pumps

Installing a heat pump is the most effective way to decarbonise your home heating. Heat pumps deliver a reliable, affordable source of heat all year round. They work best in homes that are well insulated and have modern, large, low-temperature radiators.

Lighting

Switching to LEDs can reduce electricity consumption from lighting by 90%. Adding motion sensors for rarely used rooms or corridors can further help to drive down energy bills.

Heating & hot water

In most cases heating and hot water make up the biggest part of your energy bill. Upgrading radiators or installing a heat pump can greatly improve comfort and reduce long-term costs.

Doors & windows

Upgrading windows and doors will not only save money on energy costs but it will make your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer, as well as reducing levels of noise pollution.

Flooring

Ground floors and rooms above an unheated space (like a garage or a basement) will lose a lot of heat, so it is important that floors are properly insulated wherever possible.

Roofing

Up to 25% of heat loss occurs from uninsulated roof space. Topping up your loft insulation to the recommended minimum of 270mm will immediately improve comfort and reduce heat loss.

Walls

Most heat loss in the home is through walls – in some cases up to half. Solutions can include Cavity Wall Insulation, External Wall Insulation, or Internal Wall Insulation.

Mould & damp

Many homes in England suffer from mould and damp. Properties in Brighton and Hove are especially vulnerable due to a high number of basement flats and a lot of moisture in the air.

Battery storage

Introduce electricity or thermal battery storage. Charge your battery when energy is cheap and abundant for use when it is scarce and expensive. You can also participate in demand flexibility.

Smart appliances

Reduce bills by replacing appliances that use a lot of energy with modern smart models. This could include a thermostat and heating controls, smart TRVs, or ‘power down’ plugs.

Working with landlords to improve the energy performance of their properties

Even though they often don’t live in the properties they own, we know that many landlords want to do the right thing on behalf of their tenants.

Improving the energy performance and heat retention of a property will increase its value and attractiveness to tenants. This means that landlords can charge a higher rent as well as making sure they comply with Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES).

Furthermore, reducing levels of damp, mould, and water penetration will have a significant impact on the durability of a building, decreasing the likelihood of a need for major structural repair.

BHESCo have provided consultancy services and energy surveys on behalf of a variety of property owners in Sussex, including Brighton & Hove City Council, Southdown Housing, and Brighton Housing Trust, in addition to private landlords.
