Finding the right solution for lower bills at Fareshare Sussex

Fareshare Sussex redistributes surplus food to organisations such as food banks that support vulnerable groups in Brighton and Hove.

The charity approached BHESCo to investigate the feasibility of installing rooftop solar panels on its warehouse in Moulsecoomb.

Unfortunately, due to planning restrictions, we could not develop the solar panel project beyond the planning stage.

However, following a detailed survey of the building by our Energy Saving Service, BHESCo was able to design a new lighting system which we believed would significantly reduce energy bills and carbon emissions of the organisation.

Reducing energy use with an energy efficient lighting solution

For this community energy project, BHESCo partnered with Lightfoot LED, a local energy-saving lighting specialist based in Brighton.

An entirely new lighting configuration was designed, replacing all the lighting units in the warehouse with energy efficient LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes).

A total of 98 lamps were installed at a cost of £4,451. The new lamps will be leased from BHESCo to Fareshare Sussex for a period of eight years, after which time the lamps will belong to Fareshare which will benefit from 100% of the financial savings.

The project was financed via BHESCo’s ‘Pay As You Save’ finance initiative, whereby the upfront cost is covered by BHESCo’s shareholders, which is then repaid over a number of years by Fareshare sussex using the saving achived from their monthly energy bills.

A detailed examinaton of Fareshare Sussex’s energy bills for 2016 suggested that they will reduce their electricity consumption by an impressive 32% by switching to LED lighting.

This will reduce their carbon emissions by 56.9 tonnes over the lifetime of the lamps, which is a significant amount for a relatively simple change. In fact, it’s the equivalent of growing, shipping and selling 711,288 bananas.
