Did you know India is rewriting the rules of energy transition and doing it faster than most of the world imagined possible?

In just over a decade, India has achieved something extraordinary. As of March 2025, approximately 98.83% of its broad-gauge railway network has been electrified, covering 68,701 kilometers out of a total 69,512 kilometers. This move makes it one of the largest electrified rail networks globally, significantly reducing fossil fuel use across the country (Mint, 2025).

What’s more, India’s commitment to renewable energy is evident in its rapid capacity expansion. By March 31, 2025, the country’s installed renewable energy capacity reached 220.1 GW, with solar power accounting for 48% of this total. This impressive growth underscores India’s dedication to a sustainable energy future (EnergyWorld by Economics Time, 2025).

From powering remote Himalayan villages to transforming its urban infrastructure, India is embracing clean energy with urgency and ambition. Why does this matter? Because India, home to 1.4 billion people is demonstrating that developing countries can leapfrog straight into a cleaner, fairer energy future without following a fossil-fuel-first path.

At BHESCo, we find this inspiring. It reminds us that local and national efforts can go hand-in-hand and that bold, well-planned policies can spark real change.

Perhaps it’s time we asked, if India can do it, why can’t the UK move faster too?
